Jamaal and Alisha are definitely our most memorable long distance couple of 2017. Alisha represents Toronto in this relationship, but after their union, she moves to Atlanta to be with her sweet heart, Jamaal. With the strong bolds of these families, I feel for her family as they send her off BUT it makes so much sense with the way Jamaal and Alisha are perfect for one another.
We start our Friday at Alisha’s house and Jamaal’s aunt’s respectively. We did our usual prep work but, for the first time, I got to capture some Henna touch-ups. This was done the night before, as is tradition for a Nikkah (muslim wedding), but sometimes a girl needs her touch-ups! Jamaal sees his bride for the first time as she is walked down the aisle by her brother and father at Agnus Glen Golf Club. It was beautiful.
Since I started shooting weddings, I've gotten a chance to have conversations that I wouldn't have had otherwise. One of those particular conversations goes something like this:
Friend: Ryan, I really like your videos!
Me: Thanks! I'm so glad you like them...
Friend: I wish we had gotten videography for our wedding...
Some of the time, these are people who got married a longer time ago when video was inaccessible or when the best of wedding videography was Uncle Bob wandering around the wedding venue with his handy-dandy camcorder. However, videography, wedding videography in particular, has evolved way beyond that in the last 7-8 years. For couples in 2017 interested in recording their special moments, it's beneficial to do some looking.
This blog post is a gentle appeal to not let go to waste a great opportunity to capture your special day
I started 2017 with a bang! As some of you may know, I moved living and office spaces this past December. With just over half of the unpacking done, I was off to Georgia, USA with some of my crew to Elton and Stephanie’s wedding weekend. I’ve attended Chinese weddings before but I learned a lot of “super-traditional” things at this one, courtesy of the bride’s mother. Some of these traditions started the night before the wedding; I’ll try to feature these in the final film in several weeks.
This sweet couple is the second YYZ-ATL (Toronto-Atlanta) love affair that I’ve captured in the last six months, and Canada gets the win on this one as Elton plans to join his bride here in the tundra (Side note: the other is Jamaal & Alisha, whose feature is coming soon!). Elton and Stephanie are very dear to me and, not only did I have the honour of capturing their day, but I also had quite a few more roles for the weekend. One of those roles will be obvious when you watch the video.
Big shout-out to JP Framework, who partnered with me to capture the celebrations, and to all the other great vendors I worked with along the way. Enjoy the sneak peek!
Kwami and Perpetual exchanged vows and rings. They then went to sign their marriage documents in the common fashion but what happened after that totally caught us off-guard. At the end of the signing, the (worship) band picked up the tempo and members of the audience flooded to the front of the room. The once typical altar area accommodating the couple, their besties and the officiant turned into a dance floor of praise and worship as friends and family celebrated Kwami and Perpetual officially becoming a couple. It was at that point, I realized that these lovely people were going to put me and Tristan to work that day!
Three days earlier, we captured Toks and Abiola’s traditional Nigerian celebration and learned that dancing every 15-20mins during each part of the day was the norm. Though Kwami and his bride were having a Ghanaian celebration, there were many similarities. Some of these similarities included:
Ryan Walters, the founder and operator of Aperture Lane. Look forward to sharing great stories with you!
