In our last wedding of 2016, we got quite the cultural experience at Vuso and MJ’s wedding. This Zimbabwean-Filippino, (Zimbabpino?) love affair was one of those reminders that, as MJ’s sister declares, love knows no borders.
Andrea and I got to the reception and started our usual set-up. After troubleshooting a few lighting positions, one of the friends of bride came and said we were needed out in the lobby. The grooms family decided last-minute to do a Zimbabwean tradition of welcoming the bride. We ran to our station, grabbed two cameras, and entered the lobby to a scene of women dancing and signing. We hit “record” and experienced our first traditions from this culture.
The women lay their traditional wraps on the floor for the bridesmaids and, ultimately, the bride to walk on as they entered the reception area while signing and chanting in celebration in their cultural language.
I’ve filmed Filipino wedding traditions before so I wasn’t too worried about what to expect, but I had no idea what kind of treats awaited us in the program. We got to see the Tinikling and Efugao dances performed, which were like nothing we’ve seen before at a wedding.
On top of getting cultured that fall evening, the crowd was very lively, especially with catalyst of Chris Zoleta. If you’re looking to liven the party and encourage your guests to be more giving, this DJ/MC is your man! After constantly spurring on the crowd, convincing several guests to sing during dinner, he concluded his act with joining the guests on the dance floor and guided them in a “Thriller” (by Michael Jackson) dance lesson.
As Andrea and I pulled out of Destiny Banquet Hall, I turned to her and said, “I’ve never been so tired after a wedding before”. That’s testament to what a great day and wedding season we had!
Until the next post!
